Things to do in San Juan Island

Farm Tour & Shellfish Shucking at Westcott Bay Shellfish Farm

After arriving on San Juan Island, take a scenic drive to Westcott Bay Shellfish Farm. Winding through the wooded roads feels like you’re visiting an old friend’s secluded cabin.

On arrival, we were welcomed warmly by a member of the farm team, whose passion for shellfish and stewardship radiated from the start.

They kicked off the tour with a fascinating backstory: in the late 1970s, this bay was home to the renowned Westcott Bay Seafarms, supplying oysters to top restaurants nationwide. Over time, however, the farm fell into disrepair and was nearly converted into a private home site.

Thankfully, Erik and Andrea Anderson, dedicated to reviving its legacy, purchased the property in 2013 and set out to rebuild. With a commitment to community and sustainability, they restored the farm’s infrastructure, reestablished shellfish beds, and created a thriving operation that respects the bay’s unique ecosystem.

During the tour, you get a peek at every part of the operation, from tiny, newly planted clam shells to mature oyster beds. The hands-on experience ends with a shucking demo, where visitors can try their hand at this surprisingly challenging art!

The staff was incredibly patient, guiding me through each step until I finally got the hang of it—and let me say, freshly shucked oysters taste even better when you’ve done the work yourself.

While the on-site restaurant was closed during my visit, it’s known for serving up delicious, farm-fresh shellfish dishes. Based on the quality of the oysters alone, I’d happily return for a full meal to experience everything they have to offer.

The hours at Westcott Bay Shellfish Farm vary greatly depending on the season, with more limited availability in fall and winter. Before heading out, check their website to confirm current hours.

Whale and Wildlife Watching Tour with San Juan Excursions

The waters around San Juan Island are known as one the best places to see orcas in the world, so our afternoon whale-watching trip with San Juan Excursions was one of the most anticipated parts of the trip.

Sadly for me, orcas weren’t spotted on our boat trip, which was bad luck. However, we did have an unexpected treat—a Minke whale sighting, which is rare and thrilling in its own right. Besides that, the waters around the San Juans are rich with wildlife, and we saw plenty of sea lions, a sea otter, and several bird species like bald eagles and common murres.

A whale swims near the surface of a calm ocean, revealing its dorsal fin against the blue water.

San Juan Excursions stands out not only for their expertise but also for their commitment to customer satisfaction. If you miss out on orca sightings, they offer a raincheck so you can try again on another day. Their crew is knowledgeable, sharing fascinating insights about each species we encountered. Plus, they snap photos during the tour and share the best shots with you afterward, making it easy to relive these moments.

For a clear day trip, keep an eye out for impressive views of Mount Baker, Turtleback Mountain, and Mount Constitution on Orcas Island. These scenic views add to the experience, making it more than just a wildlife tour.

Pro Tips for Whale Watching:

  • Go Eco-Friendly: Follow the crew’s guidelines for quiet and respectful wildlife viewing to minimize disturbance to the animals.
  • Capture Great Photos: Bring a zoom lens if you have one; wildlife can be unpredictable, and the right equipment helps you capture shots even from a distance.
  • Dress for the Elements: The weather on the water can shift quickly, so layers and waterproof gear are essential, especially for an afternoon tour.

Dinner and Local Brews at San Juan Island Brewing Company

After a full day of exploring, San Juan Island Brewing Company was the perfect spot to wind down.

Arriving around six, we found the place packed with locals and visitors, which speaks volumes about its popularity. The brewery has a spacious indoor and outdoor seating area, so if you arrive during peak hours, grab a pint and relax outside while waiting for a table.

The menu features delicious pub fare, and I went with one of their wood-fired pizzas—just what I needed after a long day on the water. For beer lovers, their tap list is extensive, with a range of local brews covering everything from crisp lagers to rich stouts. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, with a mix of locals and travelers.

Unwind at the Discovery Inn

The Discovery Inn is a cozy, comfortable choice for unwinding after a day of adventure on San Juan Island. Located about a 20-minute walk or quick drive from downtown Friday Harbor, it’s a great option if you prefer a peaceful spot outside downtown.

Some rooms have been recently remodeled, and I was especially impressed by the modern design—the spacious shower was beautiful, and the king-sized bed, stacked with pillows, made for an incredibly restful night’s sleep.

The inn’s outdoor jacuzzi is a treat! Set in the park-like grounds, it’s the perfect spot to relax under the stars and ease any tired muscles after a day of exploring.

Morning Stroll and Breakfast in Friday Harbor

Start your second day with a leisurely morning walk through Friday Harbor, where the charm is as much in the small details as the stunning coastal views. As you wander the streets, you’ll pass cute, colorful houses and a variety of gift shops, perfect for browsing local crafts, artwork, and souvenirs to remember your trip by.

For breakfast, we stopped by Riptide Cafe, which quickly became a favorite. Their avocado toast hit the spot with fresh toppings, and the coffee was just what I needed to start the day.

Hiking and Whale Watching in Lime Kiln Point State Park

Start your next day with a peaceful hike at Lime Kiln Point State Park, known as one of the best places in the world to watch whales from shore. This beautiful park, sometimes called “Whale Watch Park,” offers a network of trails with breathtaking views of the Salish Sea.

Walking through the old-growth trees and along the rugged coastline, you’ll find scenic spots to take in the landscape and maybe even catch sight of orcas, especially from May to September.

The Lime Kiln Lighthouse is a park highlight, and there’s a special treat for visitors—a hydrophone system next to the lighthouse that broadcasts live underwater sounds. If you’re lucky, you can hear the sounds of whales and other marine life before spotting them!

The terrain at Lime Kiln is generally flat, making the trails accessible and perfect for a morning stroll. Bring your camera for shots of the lighthouse against the Salish Sea backdrop, as well as panoramic views that stretch toward Canada on clear days.

If you have time, you could also stop at San Juan Island National Historical Park nearby, where the American and English Camps offer a glimpse into the island’s history and sweeping views over grassy meadows and rugged coastline.

Getting to San Juan Island

For most travelers, the ferry from Anacortes is the best route to San Juan Island, offering a scenic and straightforward journey. We chose to walk on the ferry, which simplified the process and avoided the need for vehicle reservations.

The ferry ride takes about an hour, with beautiful views of nearby islands and the Salish Sea, making it a relaxing way to begin your San Juan Island adventure. On board, there’s a small café for snacks, though cell service fades in and out, so bring a book or simply enjoy the sights.
